Calculate your courier billable weight

Billable weight (also called chargeable or volumetric weight billing) is the number couriers use for the rate. It is the higher of two values: what the packed carton weighs on a scale, and volumetric weight from the box size. At FineEx we compare both before we quote in CAD.

Measure length × width × height of the packed box in centimetres, then divide by 5000. That result is volumetric kg. Example: 50 × 40 × 40 cm ÷ 5000 = 16 kg volumetric. If the scale shows only 8 kg, the quote usually runs on 16 kg.

Because the box is light for its size. Clothes, pillows, and half-empty cartons often bill on centimetres, not kilograms. Pack denser, use a smaller carton, or bring photos with a tape in the frame so we can compare options before you drive in.

For most international air products from our Surrey desk we use ÷ 5000 (cm to kg). Some DHL or FedEx products use a different divisor. If the product on your quote is different, we say so before the label prints — this calculator shows the desk default.
